In September 2020, a high-stakes underwater repair project was carried out on the Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) unit “Safer.” The operation involved sophisticated underwater interventions, such as plugging sea chest suction ports and halting seawater flooding. Additionally, damaged seawater pipelines were meticulously repaired to restore full operational functionality. These measures were essential to ensure the structural integrity of the vessel and to prevent any potential hazards associated with seawater ingress.
Conducting underwater repairs on the FSO “Safer” presented significant challenges due to the inherently hazardous and dynamic marine environment. Performing intricate repairs in strong currents, under limited visibility and high-water pressure, demanded exceptional precision and the use of advanced underwater techniques. Additionally, ensuring diver safety while managing the coordination of sophisticated underwater equipment and addressing the continuous impact of seawater pressure on the repairs further underscored the operation’s complexity.
