During August 2008, on the slipway of the Yemen Gulf of Aden Ports Corporation, we undertook a major refurbishment project for the fishing vessel “GREKO 4”, carried out all dock work (Hull cleaning, shot blasting, hull painting, cathodic protection replacing, maintaining of: anchor system with anchor chain, sea chest boxes with valves, cooling sea box and mooring fenders system). The project focused on overhauling the propulsion system—including the propeller shaft and controllable pitch propeller (CPP)—and upgrading the steering system. Every repair and overhaul were performed in strict accordance with international class requirements. This resulted in improved maneuverability, enhanced fuel efficiency, and extended the vessel’s service life, thereby ensuring that it met the demanding operational standards of modern commercial fishing.
Refurbishing “GREKO 4” involved the intricate task of integrating modern propulsion components with the vessel’s existing legacy systems, all while maintaining the highest levels of operational safety. The project was further complicated by the necessity to adhere to a strict overhaul schedule that minimized downtime, as any delay would disrupt commercial operations. Unforeseen issues like severe corrosion and outdated internal systems emerged during the refurbishment, demanding additional remedial measures to ensure the vessel’s long-term performance and reliability.
